The poem: "Tommy’s Prayer" caused me to ponder when I was a child. The thought that a helpless child was all alone in a cold dark corner, hungry and scared, broke my little heart. When I became a mature adult, I wrote what I remembered from having the poem recited to me over and over again (just to laugh at my tearful response). A few years ago a lady read my account of the poem (on line), and she contacted me. (I called my poem: I Remember Tommy!) The lady said that she also remembered hearing the poem when she was young. She wanted to know if I had a copy of it; I told her that I didn’t have it, but, if I find it, I’d email a copy to her. Well, several years passed and by the time I found the (displaced) poem, I had lost her address. I believe the poem was written: in the late 1800’s, in England. I question: why the author is unknown. And who! Would write such powerful prose, and not be known to anyone. Why was her identity hidden (IMO)? Was Tommy a real boy or just the inspired thoughts of a caring human being? I don’t recommend that children read: "Tommy Prayer" unless they are also taught that they can make a difference in the world. No child should be discarded as trash; and no youngster should be made to imagine suffering children.
